First off, the weather here in West Indiana/East Illinois is not quite what I’m used to. I’ve been here a week and it hasn’t warmed up quite past 75. In fact today it stayed a cool 45 degrees … it’s as if I stepped back a month or two into March. Not complaining though, it’s not snowing (yet) and it isn’t 90 degrees (yet). On the work side things have been slow due to our employers being mostly occupied with getting their crops planted. Other than the fact that this meant we were not working, hasn’t been that bad actually. I haven’t gotten this much sleep in ages. And I’ve managed to get a lot of other outstanding projects done too so I haven’t wasted too much time.

The highlight of this week was probably getting checked out in the company’s Cherokee 140. This, my friend is no ordinary PA-28-140 mind you … This one has a souped up 160 HP Lycoming engine along with inboard wing vortex generators (it’ll actually continue to fly well below the stated stall speed … quite impressive actually). All things considered, it’s a nice flying airplane and we just have some minor tweaks to do on it. The base airport is also rather fascinating. It’s a private field owned by the company and has a few noteworthy features. Aside from the fact that it’s a grass runway that’s just over 2000 feet long with rolling terrain, there is also the minor issue of 100+ foot tall power lines on the approach end of runway 01 along with an interestingly placed tree on short final. This is the most challenging grass strip I have been into (not that I’ve flown into many … in hindsight I wish I had been able to take that mission flying class at Andrews) but could prove to be rather fun once I get the hang of it.

The rest of this week was lost either due to bad weather or schedule conflicts so today was the first day we actually got to come in to work again. Being that the ceilings were about 400 feet and not really forecasted to improve we weren’t expecting to do much flying today (bah). So we spent the day learning about the camera equipment and its operation and building and verifying the operation routes. All in all it was a productive day and to be honest it was just a relief to be doing some work at all … I was starting to get worried that the week would go by and I’d spend it at home.

Still don’t really have any pictures … this is mostly due to somehow having messed up my phone camera. Will have to work on that later, for now I’ll just find some other way of doing that.

Welp that’s it for now and hopefully by Monday things will start seriously.

*Title image by Cyclonediesel at www.motortopia.com* And thus ends my first week out of Berrien Springs and the great state of Michigan.
